Playing Browser Games on Your Phone: Touch Control Tips

Every game on Patrol Arcade runs on phones and tablets as well as on computers — no app, no download, just open the page and play. Touchscreens do change how a game feels, though. This guide covers how the touch controls in our games work, how to set up your phone for the best experience, and how to fix the most common small problems, like missing sound or a high score that doesn't seem to save.

How touch controls work in our games

We design each game so that it can be played with one thumb, with no tiny on-screen buttons to hunt for in the middle of the action.

Catch the Robber: a floating joystick

In Catch the Robber, touch anywhere on the map and drag. A virtual joystick appears exactly where your finger landed: a faint circle marks the centre and a brighter knob follows your thumb. Drag further from the centre to walk faster, up to full speed at the edge of the circle. A very small movement near the centre is ignored, so resting your thumb on the screen won't make the sheriff drift.

Because the joystick appears wherever you touch, you can put your thumb in whatever spot feels comfortable — and move it if it starts to cover the action.

Highway Pursuit: follow your finger

In Highway Pursuit the patrol car accelerates by itself, so you only need to steer. Touch the road and the car glides sideways towards your finger. Lift your finger and it holds its lane. There is no brake on touch devices — instead, change lanes early and give slow trucks plenty of room.

Set up your phone before you play

  • Choose the right orientation. Catch the Robber uses a wide city map, so it looks much bigger with your phone turned sideways. Highway Pursuit is designed for portrait mode and fits best held upright.
  • Use the Fullscreen button. Both games have a Fullscreen button above the game area. On Android and most tablets it hides the browser's address bar and gives you the largest possible view; tap it again (or use the back gesture) to leave. iPhone browsers don't allow web pages to go fullscreen, so on an iPhone simply turn the phone sideways and scroll until the game fills the screen.
  • Turn on auto-rotate if the game doesn't turn when you rotate your phone.
  • Close other apps and tabs if the game feels choppy, especially on older phones. Our games are light, but a browser with dozens of open tabs can still slow things down.
  • Turn up the brightness a little if you play outdoors — the vision cones in Catch the Robber are deliberately soft and easier to read on a bright screen.

Sneaking on a touchscreen

On a keyboard you hold Shift to sneak in Catch the Robber. On a touchscreen that would need a second finger, so instead there is a Sneak button above the game that works as a switch: tap it once to start sneaking and tap it again to stop. The button lights up blue while sneaking is on, and a small "SNEAKING" label appears in the corner of the map.

Tip: switch sneaking on only for the final block of your approach. It roughly halves your speed, so leaving it on while crossing the map lets other robbers finish their jobs.

Sound not playing?

Phones are careful about websites playing sound, and that sometimes surprises players. If the game is silent, check these in order:

  1. The in-game sound button. It shows Sound: On or Sound: Off. Your choice is remembered for next time, so it may still be off from an earlier visit.
  2. Your phone's silent switch or mode. On many phones, silent mode also mutes sound from web pages.
  3. Media volume. Sound effects use the media volume, not the ringer volume.
  4. Tap the game once. Browsers only allow a page to play sound after you have interacted with it. Our effects start working as soon as you press Play.

Why didn't my high score save?

Your best score is stored in your browser on your own device — it isn't uploaded anywhere and doesn't need an account. That keeps things private and simple, but it has a few side effects:

  • Private or incognito tabs forget everything when you close them, including your best score.
  • Clearing browsing data or site data also resets it.
  • Different browsers and devices keep separate scores. A record set in one browser won't show up in another.

If you want to keep your records, play in a normal browser tab and avoid clearing data for our site. You can read more about what we store in our Privacy Policy.

Pausing when life gets in the way

Phones get interrupted — by calls, messages, or someone asking you to help carry the shopping. Our games pause automatically when you switch to another app or tab, so you won't come back to a lost life. When you return, just tap Resume.

You can also pause at any time with the Pause button above the game.

Comfort matters

Short games are perfect for a few spare minutes, and they are most enjoyable in short sessions. Hold your phone at a comfortable distance, take a break every so often to rest your eyes and hands, and don't worry about beating your record in one sitting — it will still be there tomorrow. We wrote more about why short sessions work so well in Why Short Browser Games Are So Satisfying.

Quick checklist

  • Sideways for Catch the Robber, upright for Highway Pursuit.
  • Tap Fullscreen for a bigger view.
  • Use the Sneak switch for the final approach.
  • No sound? Check the sound button, silent mode and media volume.
  • Play in a normal (not private) tab to keep your high score.
