Why Short Browser Games Are So Satisfying

Some of the most-played games in the world take less than five minutes a round. Small browser games in particular have a special appeal: you open a page, and a few seconds later you are playing. Here is why these little games are so satisfying — and what we try to get right when we design ours.

Zero friction

There is no installer, no account and no update to wait for. The distance between "I have a few minutes" and "I am playing" is a single click. That low barrier is exactly what makes a quick game fit into a coffee break, a bus ride or the minutes before a meeting.

Clear goals, clear feedback

Good arcade games tell you exactly what to do and exactly how well you are doing it. In Catch the Robber, the goal is shown at the start of every level, the counter at the top tells you how many robbers are left, and every catch pops a score right where it happened. When the rules are clear, all of your attention goes into playing well.

Easy to learn, room to improve

The best small games can be learned in a few seconds but reward practice for a long time. Anyone can walk into a robber, but noticing that thieves glance over their shoulder on a rhythm, or that corners hide you from their vision, takes a few rounds. That feeling of getting a little better each time is one of the most satisfying parts of any game.

Short rounds make "one more try" easy

When a game over only costs you a couple of minutes, you are happy to try again immediately. Short rounds also make experimentation cheap: you can test a risky new strategy, fail, and be back in action almost instantly.

Variety within simple rules

A small set of rules can still produce a lot of variety. Our levels generate a fresh city each time, with shops, banks and parks in new places and the getaway vans parked at different exits. The rules stay the same, but every round asks you to read a slightly different situation.

A healthy way to play

Short games are best enjoyed in short sessions. Take regular breaks, look away from the screen every now and then, and remember that a high score will still be there tomorrow. Games are at their best when they are a fun part of your day rather than the whole of it.

What we are working on

We are building more original games in the same spirit: quick to start, easy to understand and fun to master. If you have an idea or feedback about our games, we would love to hear from you on our contact page.
